The Briefing: Joao Pedro Nets Hat-Trick, Rodri Has Back Surgery and More

A lot can happen in Premier League preseason in the space of a single day, and today’s a perfect example. Chelsea’s newest attacking star announced himself in style, while Manchester City picked up an injury blow just weeks before the new season begins. Here’s everything worth knowing.

Joao Pedro Announces Himself in Xabi Alonso’s First Match

Chelsea kicked off their preseason campaign in Sydney with a wild 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers, and it was Joao Pedro who stole the show. Coming off the bench, the Brazilian forward scored a rapid hat-trick in the space of just ten minutes, netting in the 80th, 86th, and 90th minutes to help seal the win. It marked Xabi Alonso’s first match in charge of the club, and Chelsea also used the occasion to debut their new 2026/27 home kit.

The result came as part of the Sydney Super Cup, a preseason tournament also featuring Tottenham Hotspur, Sydney FC, and Western Sydney Wanderers. Pedro’s timing couldn’t have been better either. Having missed out on Brazil’s World Cup squad this summer, the forward looked sharp and hungry throughout, alongside strong performances from young winger Estevao and fellow attacker Jamie Gittens. It’s an early statement of intent from a player who’ll be central to how Alonso wants his new-look Chelsea side to play going forward.

Rodri to Undergo Back Surgery

It’s a very different story at Manchester City, where World Cup-winning captain Rodri is facing a fresh setback. Fresh off winning the Golden Ball as player of the tournament for Spain’s World Cup triumph, Rodri now needs minor surgery to address a back issue, putting his availability for the start of the new Premier League season in real doubt.

Manager Enzo Maresca confirmed the midfielder will have surgery imminently and will need rest and rehabilitation afterward, with his return timeline still unclear. City had already been planning to be without Rodri for the Community Shield against Arsenal on August 16 due to his World Cup exploits, but this latest issue could extend his absence into City’s opening league fixtures, starting at home to Bournemouth on August 23, followed by trips to Crystal Palace and a home game against Coventry City.

It continues a difficult run of fitness issues for the 30-year-old, who missed almost all of the 2024-25 season with a torn ACL and dealt with further muscular issues throughout last season. With one year left on his contract and transfer speculation linking him to Real Madrid, the timing adds an extra layer of uncertainty to his immediate future at the Etihad.
