Balogun Puts the US Ahead Before Red Card Drama

Bosnia and Herzegovina started the match with high intensity. They caught the American defense napping early on, forcing goalkeeper Matt Freese into two brilliant saves from Ermedin Demirović and Kerim Alajbegović within the opening ten minutes.

The US team quickly settled down and began dominating possession. Folarin Balogun had a goal ruled out for offside in the 31st minute and hit the crossbar moments later. His persistence finally paid off right on the stroke of halftime.

Captain Tim Ream intercepted a Bosnian clearance and fed Tyler Adams, who flicked the ball to Malik Tillman. Tillman’s clever pass took a double deflection off the Bosnian defense, but Folarin Balogun reacted quickest to slide a low, left-footed shot past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.

The momentum shifted completely in the 64th minute. Chasing a loose ball, Balogun accidentally landed his studs onto the ankle of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemović. Following a lengthy VAR review, the referee showed Balogun a controversial straight red card, reducing the United States to ten men.

Malik Tillman Seals a Historic Victory

With a man advantage, Bosnia pushed men forward to find an equalizer. However, manager Mauricio Pochettino organized his defense brilliantly, keeping the Bosnian attackers away from the penalty box.

Instead of sitting back, the ten-man US team continued to threaten with counter-attacks. In the 82nd minute, Sergiño Dest won a direct free-kick roughly 20 yards out from goal on the left side.

Malik Tillman stepped up to take the free-kick. Despite nursing a sore foot from a previous tackle, Tillman hit a powerful, curving right-footed shot over the wall. Bosnian goalkeeper Vasilj got his hand to the ball but could not stop it from smashing into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Breaking a 24-Year Jinx

This result marks a major milestone for American soccer. It is the first time the US Men’s National Team has won a World Cup knockout match since defeating Mexico in 2002. The victory also snapped a 13-game winless streak for the US against European opponents at the World Cup.

The United States will now travel to Seattle Stadium on Monday, July 6, 2026, for a highly anticipated Round of 16 clash against Belgium. The US will be forced to play that match without their leading striker, Balogun, due to suspension.
