Belgium Pulls Off Miracle Comeback to Defeat Senegal 3-2 in Extra Time

Belgium produced one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup history yesterday. The Red Devils came from two goals down to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time in an unforgettable Round of 32 knockout match at the Seattle Stadium.

Captain Youri Tielemans scored a controversial penalty in the 125th minute—the latest goal ever recorded in a FIFA World Cup—to complete the turnaround and send his country into the Round of 16.

The Key Match Highlights

Senegal Dominates and Takes Control

Senegal played with incredible intensity from the opening whistle and completely outclassed Belgium for most of normal time.

The African side broke the deadlock midway through the first half. Star forward Sadio Mané delivered a brilliant cross into the penalty box. Ismaïla Sarr’s header hit the post, but Habib Diarra reacted quickest to slam the rebound past Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois from close range.

Belgium struggled to create chances, and things went from bad to worse early in the second half. Moussa Niakhaté launched a beautiful diagonal pass from deep midfield. Ismaïla Sarr controlled the ball perfectly on his chest and smashed it past Courtois to put Senegal up 2-0.

At that point, Belgium looked completely defeated and was heading out of the tournament.

The Epic Belgian Revival

Frustrations boiled over for Belgium, with teammates arguing on the pitch. Striker Romelu Lukaku, who came off the bench at halftime, had to step in as a peacemaker to calm tempers down. Ironically, that spark completely shifted the momentum of the game.

The late drama unfolded rapidly:

  1. The Lifeline (86th min): Thomas Meunier delivered a low cross into the box, and Lukaku smartly flicked it past Senegal goalkeeper Mory Diaw to make it 2-1.

  2. The Equalizer (89th min): Just three minutes later, Leandro Trossard floated a dangerous cross into the box. Senegal keeper Diaw misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing Tielemans to nod it into an empty net to force extra time.

VAR Controversy Decides the Match

Both teams fought bravely through extra time, and a penalty shootout seemed inevitable. However, deep into stoppage time of the second period of extra time, everything changed.

Dodi Lukébakio hit the crossbar for Belgium, but right before that shot, Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara clashed with Tielemans inside the box. Honduran referee Saíd Martínez went over to check the VAR monitor. After a lengthy review, he awarded a highly debated penalty to Belgium, causing furious protests from the Senegal players.

Tielemans showed nerves of steel amid the chaos. He stepped up and smashed the spot-kick into the top corner in the 125th minute to seal a breathtaking 3-2 victory.

With this dramatic escape, Belgium advances to the Round of 16, where they will face the United States on Monday, July 6, 2026.
