DR Congo Stuns England Early
DR Congo entered the match as heavy underdogs, but they shocked the world just seven minutes into the first half.
Chancel Mbemba flicked a deep cross into the penalty area, finding Brian Cipenga completely unmarked on the left side. Cipenga controlled the ball quickly and fired a low strike past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. It was Cipenga’s first-ever international goal, giving DR Congo a dream start in their first World Cup knockout appearance.
England struggled to settle down after the early goal. DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi played exceptionally well, making two brilliant saves from Jude Bellingham headers. Right before halftime, Mpasi again denied England by blocking a close-range volley from Harry Kane.
DR Congo almost doubled their lead before the break when Yoane Wissa beat the defense, but his shot hit the post.
Harry Kane Sparks the Comeback
England came out stronger in the second half, but they could not break through the stubborn Congolese defense. Seeing his team struggle, manager Thomas Tuchel made crucial changes after the hour mark. He brought on Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka to bring energy to the wings.
The substitutions changed the game completely:
-
The Equalizer (75th min): Declan Rice found Anthony Gordon on the flank. Gordon delivered a perfectly chipped cross into the box, and Harry Kane rose highest to head home.
-
The Winner (86th min): Kane struck again. The striker turned away from his marker just inside the box and blasted an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net.
DR Congo pushed hard in stoppage time, but Yoane Wissa sent a dangerous free-kick just over the crossbar right before the final whistle.
A Historic Win for the Three Lions
This victory marks a historic milestone for England. For the first time in their World Cup history, the Three Lions won a match after trailing at halftime. In their nine previous World Cup games in which they went into the break losing, they drew twice and lost seven times.
With this dramatic comeback, England advances to the Round of 16. They will face tournament co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
