A Non-League Football Adventure: Wythenshawe Town

A Non-League Football Adventure: Wythenshawe Town

Welcome back to our “Rags to Riches” journey through the English football pyramid! The rules are simple: we pick a team, and if they win, we get promoted to the next tier. However, if they lose, we face relegation. Our latest non-league football adventure finds us in the 8th tier, visiting the home of Wythenshawe Town for a crucial match.

Upon arriving, we were greeted with a friendly welcome and a bit of lighthearted banter. After years of calling it the “leopard bag,” we finally admitted our beloved accessory is, in fact, tiger print. With our tickets and a matchday programme in hand, we were ready for the action.

Halftime Fun and Ground Quirks

Before the match even started, we invested in our halftime entertainment. The club runs a brilliant game where you buy numbered tennis balls and try to throw them closest to the centre circle. We promptly bought five, hoping for a return on our investment.

Wythenshawe Town's ground has some truly wonderful and unique features. It’s these little details that make non-league football so special.

  • Solid Benches: The substitute benches are properly brick-built, not just cheap plastic shelters.
  • Tiny Scoreboard: In one corner, there’s a tiny scoreboard, just in case you forget the score.
  • A Personal Touch: The whole place has a charming, almost garden-like feel to it. It feels loved and well-maintained.

A Non-League Football Adventure Feast

While pies are usually our go-to, today we opted for burgers and chips. After a short wait, we were armed with a feast of cheesy chips, plain chips with vinegar, and two delicious-looking burgers. Combining a burger and chips into one meal is a pro move, although carrying three separate boxes can be a challenge!

The Match: A Tense First Half

On paper, the away side, Shifnal Town, seemed the stronger team, so we decided to back them. The game kicked off, but the first half was a very cagey affair. In fact, for the first 35 minutes, there were no notable shots, goals, or even corners.

Finally, after a long wait, the first corner of the game arrived. We also had a match event challenge running: if our chosen team, Shifnal, got the third corner of the game, we would win a budget bonus. The first half ended scoreless, but the stage was set for a dramatic second half.

Second Half Drama and a Budget Bonus

The second half brought the action we were waiting for. Shifnal Town won another corner, and then another! That crucial third corner meant we had won our budget bonus challenge, adding a welcome £30 to the pot.

As the clock ticked down, the game looked destined for a draw. But then, a breakthrough! Shifnal’s striker, Shaq, found himself through on goal and calmly finished to put the visitors 1-0 up. The goal sparked celebrations and, more importantly, secured us the win.

Promotion Secured!

The final whistle confirmed the 1-0 victory for Shifnal Town. That win means we have successfully earned a promotion! We are heading up to the 7th tier of English football, the Northern Premier League Premier Division. This was a fantastic non-league football adventure, and we can't wait for the next one. Onward and upward!
