Robins aim to clip soaring Hawks’ wings

[ad_1]

FA Cup fever returns to Colston Avenue on Saturday 1st October when Carshalton Athletic host Havant & Waterlooville in the 3rd qualifying round (3pm kick off).

As draws go at this stage of the competition, Carshalton couldn’t have been handed a much tougher assignment. The Hawks are currently unbeaten in the National League South and sit second with 26 points from 10 games. They continued their impressive start to the season with a 2-0 win away at Weymouth in midweek.

The visitors also have a good recent FA Cup pedigree. Last season, they reached the 1st round proper, going out to Charlton Athletic. Most famously though, they twice led Liverpool at Anfield in the 4th round in the 2007-08 season before eventually succumbing 5-2.

Saturday’s tie has added significance for Robins’ manager, Steve McKimm, because of his past association with Hawks’ boss, Paul Doswell. Steve was a coach at Sutton United from 2012 to 2014 during Doswell’s 11-year tenure as manager of the U’s from 2008 to 2019.

The Sutton connection remains strong at Havant & Waterlooville, with Doswell having recruited several players who played for him there. Among them is player/coach Jamie Collins who scored the penalty when Sutton knocked out Leeds United in the 2016-17 season. The Hawks’ squad also includes Mo Faal, who Robins’ fans will not remember fondly because of the three goals he scored for Enfield Town against Carshalton in the two league fixtures between the teams last season.

Carshalton have reached this stage with wins over lower league opposition in VCD Athletic and Westfield. Their search for consistency goes on though after they slipped to 17th in the Isthmian League Premier Division with a 1-0 defeat at Hastings United last Saturday, having been reduced to 10 men early in the second half.
