Its been a long wait but, boy, was yesterday’s FA Trophy win worth it! The Hornets were still playing at Lancing the last time we tasted success in the competition, and after three successive defeats it looked as if they’d have to wait another year to do so as Aveley led 3-2 going into the final two minutes. But a sensational finale saw Shamir Fenelon level the tie and then Doug Tuck popped up with his maiden Horsham goal to put Dom Di Paola’s side through to the first round ‘proper’.
On a sunny autumnal afternoon, the prospects of a Horsham victory looked decidedly gloomy as a George Sykes brace put last season’s Division One North champions seemingly in control. But misjudgement by visiting ‘keeper David Hughes saw him carry Bobby Price’s long range punt across his line, seconds before half-time, while another own goal restored parity immediately after the interval.
Harry Gibbs looked to have settled the match in Aveley’s favour when he scored the goal of the match, but then came that quite incredible conclusion that, for the first time since 2018, puts Horsham into the hat for the next round.
