Bishop’s Stortford 3-0 Folkestone Invicta Match Report 4/10/22

Bishop’s Stortford went to the top of the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division with a 3-0 win at home to Folkestone Invicta on Tuesday. It was the Blues’ biggest league win of the season, with the third goal putting the hosts above Potters Bar in the table on goal difference, but the Scholars have two games in hand. It’s also five clean sheets in a row for Steve Smith’s men, who bounced back from a goalless draw against winless Wingate & Finchley on Saturday with a fourth win in five games, and extends the unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions.

Frankie Merrifield cut in off the right wing and fired wide with a low shot on his left foot, and Darren Foxley’s 25 yard strike narrowly missed the top left corner with goalkeeper Bailey Vose beaten. Back-to-back corners from Jonny Giles built the pressure on the Invicta defence, with Merrifield heading over the crossbar from six yards. Ollie Peters lashed home the opener from 20 yards, a left wing free kick by Giles was headed away, and the midfielder was unmarked on the edge of the box, and shot low through a crowd into the bottom right corner. Ian Gayle headed away Giles’ right wing cross before Merrifield could nod home, and from a promising attacking position Ira Jackson fired high and wide of the target from 25 yards. Ryan Charles fired wide from 30 yards and Jay Porter’s inviting cross was behind Merrifield and the clearance hit Foxley flush in the face but he was penalised for handball as he tried to protect himself at close range to the defender. The Blues pushed for a second before the break, with Giles going close twice on the stroke of half-time, but defenders put in blocks both times.

HT 1-0

Giles fired inches wide of the post for long range, but he made no mistake from the next attack, Charles’ cross from the left was perfect to volley home from close range to double the Stortford lead. Scott Heard’s long range strike missed the target before Tosin Olufemi ran onto Peters’ through ball and slotted home through Vose’s legs from the right side of the box. Despite being three goals down, the Kent outfit did look threatening on the break, but Jackson couldn’t hit the target from a tight angle. Foxley fizzed the ball into Donell Thomas’ feet he controlled it well but the substitute couldn’t beat Vose, with the keeper making a smart stop. Ian Draycott fired over the bar from the edge of the box, and keen to preserve the clean sheet, Olufemi cleared away a right wing cross with an Invicta player waiting behind him to nod home.
