Beere pours more woe on Casuals

A first half Tom Beere penalty gave Carshalton Athletic their second home 1-0 league win in five days as they overcame managerless bottom club Corinthian Casuals at Colston Avenue.

It could all have been so much more comfortable though for the Robins as they failed to convert a number of chances. On another day, striker Femi Akinwande could have had a hatrick.

Both sides struggled with the blustery conditions in the early going, but as the Robins began to settle Calvin Ekpiteta blazed over and Akinwande just couldn’t reach inviting Aaron Smith-Joseph crosses. Shortly after, Ollie Cook sent a diving header from a Brad Williams cross over the bar.

The Robins broke through with Beere’s spot kick after 37 minutes. Casuals gave the ball away in their own half and Hakeem Adelakun, who was perhaps lucky to escape with just a yellow card, impeded Femi Akinwande after he’d rounded goalkeeper Eddie Allan.

At the other end, Danny Bracken, who admitted after the game to “mixed emotions” about playing for the first time against the club for which he appeared over 500 times in 12 seasons, didn’t have a meaningful save to make. Corinthian Casuals’ best chance fell to their top scorer, Ben Cheklit, who headed wide from close range.

As the Robins pressed for a clincher in the second half, Beere put his effort over the bar and Akinwande was denied by Allan’s legs in added time. But, with the Robins defence looking much more solid, the missed chances didn’t prove costly.

Speaking after the game, manager Steve McKimm said: “We could, and probably should, have scored more goals today but our priority this week was to get some wins on the board to improve our league position. I can’t fault the players’ attitudes in doing that.”

Carshalton’s win lifts them to 14th ahead of their trip to league leaders, Bishops Stortford, next Saturday, prior to which they play Colliers Wood United in the Surrey Senior Cup on Monday night at Colston Avenue.
