Asisat Oshoala is a Nigerian professional football striker. She captains the Nigerian national team and she currently plays for Spanish club, Barcelona.
Oshoala’s career kicked off in 2009,when she played for Nigeria’s FC Robo. In 2013,she proceeded to play for Rivers Angel. The year 2014 was a stellar one for her as she also claimed the Ballon d’Or and the Golden Shoe at the U20 World Cup.
Her international career took of in 2015, and she had played for four clubs so far. An English team for two consecutive times, Chinese and Spanish club respectively. Upon her signing to those clubs, the club managers had beautiful things to say about her. Matt Beard, Liverpool’s club manager called her one of the best young players in the world. Arsenal manager, Pedro Losa commented, “Asisat is a fantastic talent and will be a great addition to our squad. She is quick with excellent feet and has proven she can score goals, so it’s very positive she has decided to join us.” She signed with Arsenal in March 2016.
On 10 February 2017, Oshoala signed with Chinese club Dailan. During the 2017 season, she scored 12 goals helping Dalian Quanjian win the league championship. She was awarded the league’s Golden Boot award for most goals scored.
Oshoala joined Barcelona on 31 January 2019. She scored seven goals in her seven appearances for the club during the 2018-19 season. Oshoala scored Barcelona’s only goal in a 4–1 defeat to Lyon in the 2019 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final. She was the first African (and Nigerian) to score in a Champions League Final..
Oshoala’s works speaks for her as she has been chosen as African player of the year in no less than four occasions; (2014, 2016 and 2017 and 2019). In 2015, she won BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year and Queen of The Pitch Award in 2014. She has won over twenty awards since the beginning of her football career, both national and international.
