Billericay Town 2-2 Bishop’s Stortford
Pitching In Isthmian Premier, Tuesday 13thSeptember 2022
By Mike Plume
Billericay Town struck deep into injury time to complete a comeback and secure a point against the Blues at New Lodge on Tuesday evening.
Before the game the ground fell silent as all in attendance paid tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away last week. Following the period of silence the National Anthem was also played.
When the action got underway it was the hosts who dominated the early stages with only a stunning headed goal line clearance from Jay Porter denying Town a fifth minute lead.
Porter did brilliantly again 8 minutes later to deny Cerulli as he looked to break free on the Blues goal before Ollie Peters gave the Blue their first sight of goal when curling a 25th minute free kick on to the roof of the net.
Jack Giddens made good low saves from Stevenson and Ufuah and it came somewhat against the run of play when the Blues were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute after Cerulli was adjudged to have handled an Ollie Peters cross.
Tosin Olufemi confidently stepped up to stroke home his first Blues goal to hand the visitors the advantage at the interval.
Just five minutes into the second half the lead was doubled with Ollie Peters’ deflected cross nodded home from inside the six yard box by Chris Harris.
Just four minutes later Billericay had a lifeline when Bradley Stevenson’s ambitious long range effort deflected off Harry Beadle and looped over Giddens into the net.
The game became a little scrappy with the home side collecting three cautions for late challenges as the Blues tried to see the game out, but three minutes into stoppage time the Blues lost possession leading to a break that saw Toby Stevenson arrive at the back post to tuck home and ensure the spoils were shared on a damp evening in Essex.
