Barnsley’s Alex Mowatt wins Championship player of the month

Barnsley’s Alex Mowatt wins the Sky Bet Championship player of the month, with his team currently in the playoffs.

Watford’s form, cementing them in the top two places, has resulted in Xisco Munoz winning the manager of the month.

Alex Mowatt player of the month

Four wins out of six for Barnsley in March deservedly wins captain Alex Mowatt the award after playing a key part in their success.

The set piece specialist excelled last month scoring an unstoppable free-kick at QPR, with five other goals coming from his deliveries into the box.

It puts Barnsley in a strong position in fifth going into the last few games of the season sitting two points behind Brentford in third.

Barnsley manager Valerien Ismael said: “A big congratulations to Alex, it’s a great reward for him and also for the team.

“Alex is a big personality at the club and this recognition displays his consistency at this high level.

“He brings big performances, it’s the right choice and he fully deserves to be Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month.”

Mowatt added: “The amount of games we’ve won in March and the fact that I was regularly contributing and scoring goals all help, but it’s certainly a team award and a reward for our recent efforts.

“To get this award playing as a midfielder is decent, but I want to kick on and keep scoring and creating chances right up until the end of the season.”

Xisco Munoz manager of March

A perfect five wins out of five for Watford last month earns Xisco Munoz his first award in English football.

At the start of March, Watford were competing with Swansea and Brentford for a top two finish. However, after an incredible run of form, they finished six points clear of their rivals for second place at the end of the month.

Since joining Watford in December, Xisco Munoz now has Watford playing the way he wants, scoring 12 goals and conceding two in March.

Munoz said: “We enjoy our work and give our maximum. That’s important for the group, the players, the staff and the club. The award is for everyone who helps the team.

“Relationships are so important at the training ground. If we are together we have more power. It’s amazing when you feel everyone has the same goal and same objective.”

The form for Barnsley and Watford in March may prove to be pivotal as they look to secure a place in the playoffs and top two respectively.
