Belgium 3 – 1 Wales
All on eyes were on the superstars of Belgium in Leuven last night. It was the Welsh who took the lead however with an early Harry Wilson goal after only ten minutes.
The visitors lead was very much against the run of play but also very short lived. A Kevin De Bruyne goal came twelve minutes later in a game where he stood out above the rest.
De Bruyne and Belgium drew level and maintained pressure on the Welsh goal. Shortly after, Thorgan Hazard headed his side into a 2-1 lead to score his fifth goal for Belgium. Thorgan flying the flag high for the Hazard brothers with Eden battling through an injury-struck season at Real Madrid.
Wales without key player Aaron Ramsey struggled in midfield for the majority of the game. The second half was well contested as Wales chased an equaliser but struggled to keep posession of the ball. In the 72nd minute Belgium were awarded a penalty after Chris Mepham bought down Dries Mertens with a lazy challenge.
Romelu Lukaku made no mistake from the spot and extends his record of Belgium’s all-time highest goal scorer with 58 goals in 90 games. The game finished 3-1 to the hosts who despite an early scare remained calm with a very professional performance.
What next for both Belgium and Wales?
A dominant display from the Red Devils who will certainly be a favourite for the upcoming 2021 European Championships. Plenty of positives for Wales boss Robert Page who looks to continuously push his side since their Nations League promotion last year.
On the other hand Roberto Martinez who knows Wales all too well after his time at Swansea. Martinez will be hoping his stars keep firing as they take on the Czech Republic in a tester this Saturday.
Up next for Wales a Friendly with Mexico before they too take on the Czech Republic which will be an interesting watch from the Cardiff City Stadium. Another loss could mean an uphill battle if Wales want to remain hopeful to make Qatar come 2022.
