This forthcoming week sees the first round proper of the vase, with just a few ESL clubs remaining in the competition, they will be guaranteed at least one club in the 2nd round proper as Woodford town kick off the vase fixtures with a Friday night visit of fellow ESL club Sawbridgeworth town at Ashtons. I’m sure both teams will fancy their chances of progressing with the visitors vastly improved this season.
The following day Romford will hope they are at the races as they travel to Newmarket town, having done so well this season in the FA Cup I’m sure the boro will be hoping progress further in another competition.
Buckhurst hill who in previous seasons have been the giant killers, as well as their fine win this campaign in the FA Cup over Walthamstow, face a tricky home tie against Basildon Town, they will be hoping their recent improved form will see them have enough to avoid a potential banana skin.
The motormen of Redbridge face a trip up the motorway to second meadow to take on united counties league Biggleswade united, whilst Little Oakley visit another united counties league team when they travel to Cambridgeshire to play Godmanchester Rovers a side that reached the fifth round of the vase the season prior to covid, so both clubs will not be able to take anything for granted and will need to be on their best form to further their vase journey this season.
Another club with fine vase hsitory our own Stansted travel further up the m11, to visit one of Norfolks oldest clubs Downham Town, who were founded in 1881, they currently play in the Thurlow Nunn league.
That leaves one ESL club & two former ESL clubs looking to keep their vase stories alive, firstly Burnham Ramblers, who are in a rich vain of form this season as they sit proudly at the top of their league host Ely city another outfit from Cambridge, whilst my own club Barkingside who have reached the first round proper in their best performance in the vase since 1990/91, face a mammoth task when they visit Norwich united riding high in the Thurlow Nunn premier division. Out of those two former sides I would be more confident of the Ramblers being in the 2nd round proper, it looks like the side will face a long journey back down the m11.
One more tie and the final tie involving our clubs as Enfield travel to Essex to play May & Baker on the Sunday at Aveley, I imagine that could possibly be the biggest attendance of any tie involving our clubs ,but the E’s wont have it all their own way, May & Baker are another side in great form in their league and will be looking to pull off a shock by adding the scalp of Enfield FC, to their impressive start to the season.
