Rob Semark’s squad suffered home defeat at the hands of an accomplished Whitehawk on Tuesday evening on a pitch slickened significantly by a heavy downpour just before kick-off. The young Hornets had their chances but never really got going on a frustrating evening when their free scoring start to the season came to an abrupt end.
M Morris came back into the starting line-up, with J Clay making his Horsham debut, while B Tshingoma also came into the 16 man squad on the bench.
As early as the second minute C Esnouf burst through the Horsham back line but his final touch was too heavy and Edgley, in the Hornets goal, managed to smother the ball and push it away to safety. And it was the same player that then drew a smart save from Edgley some ten minutes later before the ball was cleared for a corner.
It was from this corner that Horsham very nearly took a spectacular lead. Racing onto the clearance, T Pereira-Leeatin was first to the ball and, seeing Dailly way off his goal line, hit an audacious shot from 65 yards which, although had perfect range, lacked accuracy and went just wide.
The Hawks then took the lead in the 23rd minute when a corner routine, straight from the training ground, fell to S N’Cho who poked home from close range. Minutes later Horsham had a similar chance of their own from a corner but a lack of clinical finishing, and heroic defending by the Hawks, saw the chance missed.
Horsham then enjoyed a good period of possession with Morris pulling a shot wide on the half hour but Whitehawk were more than capable of dealing with anything their opponents could throw at them and hit a post in the 44th minute, from which the home side broke dangerously.
Picking the ball up in midfield, J Archard, fortunate not to have been cautioned minutes early for a clumsy challenge on Lyon-Monk, raced forward with Horsham outnumbering their opponents three to two but delayed his pass too long allowing the chance to be snuffed out.

Semark rung the changes at half time with J Hayes, and J Wallace, replacing J Clay, and I Hazouza respectively and this certainly gave the Hornets some of the impetus that they’d lacked in the first period. R Yoro Thomas flashed an inviting ball across the six yard box which none of his team mates could capitalise on before Whitehawk’s goalscorer, N’Cho, went into referee Jones’ book for a late challenge on B Walters.
With 25 minutes remaining, Whitehawk again hit a post before Walters earned himself a caution for a foul on N’Cho. Soon after, possibly with that caution in mind, Semark made his final change replacing Walters with forward S Zagdouni but it was the Hawks that extended their lead in the 75th minute when Lyon-Monk was given ample time to line his shot up on the angle and fired sweetly beyond Edgley.
Whitehawk effectively ended the contest on eighty minutes when they capitalised from a corner before making a double substitution of their own and retreating into a very defensive shape. Just before the final whistle Zagdouni didn’t quite get good contact on the ball as Dailly got down well to hold his scuffed shot which would merely have been a consolation for Horsham had it gone in.
Semark will now have a couple of training sessions to work with the squad before the visit of Jersey Bulls in the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup, which will be played at the Camping World Community Stadium on Friday 16th September 2022 with a 7.30pm kick off. As with all FA competitions this will be an ‘all pay’ fixture with adults £4 and concessions £2.
