We’ve Met Before – Folkestone Invicta

[ad_1]

We’ve played Folkestone Invicta a few times over years. Prior to Folkestone joining the Isthmian League they were regular members of the Kent and Southern Leagues before transferring to the Isthmian in 2003/04. Our paths briefly crossed in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons after we had been relegated from the Conference South. Folkestone Invicta were relegated at the end of the 07/08 season only to bounce straight back up to the Premier Division the following season but they were relegated once again at the conclusion of the 2010/11 season.

Thereafter our paths did not cross until we were relegated to the Isthmian Division One South at the end of the 2013/14 season. Since then we have met more regularly and plenty of goals have been scored in the these encounters, with the Robins netting 25 times and Folkestone 17 times for a combined total of 42 goals across the nine fixtures, an average of over 4 per game!

Notable clashes included a 5-3 home win in our first season in Division One South when Sean O’Toole, Austin Gacheru, Brendan Murphy-McVey, Jarrell Gray and Adriano Moraes all got on the scoresheet. The final goal coming in the 90th minute from the penalty spot by skipper Moraes after Invicta had clawed their way back from 1-3 down to 3-4. Away from home we have enjoyed some memorable encounters as well, in October 2018 we won with a superb last minute winner from Raheem Sterling-Parker which was notable as he was carrying an injury that rendered him almost unable to stand for the last part of the game. This was followed later in the season by 4-2 home win in March 2019 where Harry Ottaway bagged a hat trick to demolish Folkestone. Another memorable clash at Cheriton Road was in March 2020 where we outplayed Folkestone to win 3-1. Goals from skipper Paris Hamilton-Downes, Daniel Pappoe and Ola Sogbanmu swept us past a high flying Folkestone who were not even at the races that afternoon.

Last season’s meetings saw plenty of goals too. In November 2021, Folkestone came to Colston Avenue and were unbeaten up to that point and we went on to register a superb 5-0 win with goals from Lewis White, Luke Read, Dan Bassett (2) and Dan Hector. The return fixture at Folkestone in February saw 1-1 draw with Danny Bassett equalising on the hour mark five minutes after Luke Wanadio had put Invicta ahead.

It’s sure to be an entertaining game between these two sides who always serve up goals and excitement when they meet!

Played for both sides: Not many in this category but Jerson Dos Santos has worn both clubs colours. Jerson joined the Robins for the start of the 2018/19 season, after having played some pre-season games for Folkestone. Jerson played 26 times for the Robins and scored 6 goals before moving on half way through the season to join East Grinstead Town. Jerson returning the following season in Folkestone’s colours and scored the equaliser for them in a 1-1 draw. Thereafter he moved on to Walton Casuals and Corinthian Casuals before joining Haywards Heath Town.
