We’ve met Before Corinthian Casuals

[ad_1]

Formed in 1939 out of the merger of two famous amateur clubs, Corinthians and Casuals. Most of our earlier meetings came in the Surrey Senior Cup and our first one came in 1955-56 where we went down 3-4 at home. We met again the following season, going down 1-6 away. We had to wait a decade to gain our revenge though, winning 1-0 at home in the first round of the 1966-67 competition before losing 2-1 to Farnham Town in the second round. We won again in 1968-69, this time 1-0.

We did not meet in a league fixture until we moved into the Isthmian League and in the 1974-75 season we played each other three times, twice in the league, drawing 1-1 at home and losing 1-0 away and also going down 1-3 at home in the second round of the Surrey Senior Cup. For 1976-77 we met in a different competition for the first time, the Isthmian League Cup where we won 1-0. In 1989-90 we next played each other, in the London Senior Cup and won 6-0 before bowing out in the third round 2-3 at Boreham Wood. For our Isthmian League Division One Championship winning season in 2002-03 it was the turn of the Isthmian League Cup again where Casuals were victorious winning 2-1, we had played them a league fixture just three days previously, winning 2-1. Both games were played at King George’s Field. The later league fixture at Colston Avenue was a 2-2 draw.

Since then we have met more regularly in league games but there have still been cup encounters to remember. In 2007 we met in an FA competition for the first and only time in FA Trophy winning 2-0 at Colston Avenue where we had also won 4-0 in the League Cup a few weeks earlier against the same opposition. In 2015, with former Casuals manager Matt Howard at the helm, we were away in a League Cup tie going down 3-1 with another former Casuals man, Lee Hall, missing a penalty for us. Casuals also won 3-0 at Colston Avenue in 2018 in the same competition.

Last seasons encounters enabled Casuals to score a treble over us with wins home and away against us in the League and a Surrey Cup win on penalties with Danny Bracken saving the day for Casuals on his 500th appearance for the club!

Played (and managed!) both teams: Goalkeeper Danny Bracken racked up over 500 appearances for the Casuals before making the short journey to Colston Avenue earlier this season. Moving in the opposite direction (via Barking) is goalkeeper Eddie Allen. Also in the current Casuals squad and have have worn the Robins red are Ben Cheklit and Nat Pinney. Also having played for both teams are Harry Ottaway (now at Dorking Wanderers), Danny Dudley (now at Horsham) and Jordan Clarke. Matt Howard succesfully managed Casuals for just over a season from February 2014 to April 2015 before taking up the reins at Colston Avenue where he was manager for a brief spell in 2015-16 before moving on after a traumatic 7-1 away defeat to Ramsgate in January 2016.
