We’ve met Before – Brightlingsea Regent

Brightlingsea Regent were formed by a merger of Brightlingsea United and Regent Park Rangers in 2005. Both clubs had a long history before the merger though with Brightingsea being formed in 1928. Regent Park Rangers was a long-established youth club in the area.

Playing most of their football in the local Essex Leagues they were promoted into Division One North of the Isthmian League after finishing as runners up in the Eastern Counties League in 2013-14. After winning Division One North in 2016-17 they joined the Premier Division of the Isthmian League finishing in 20th place in 2017-18 and 13th in 2018-19. For the Covid truncated season they were in 22nd place (2019-20) and 19th place (2020-21) respectively.

The Robins first met The R’s at their North Road ground on 3 November 2018 where goals from Tommy Bradford and Jerson dos Santos secured all three points for the away team. The return fixture played at the end of March saw the Robins complete the double with another goal from Tommy Bradford and two late ones from Omar Koroma saw us home 3-0.

We did not meet again at North Road until March this year as Covid curtailed our away fixtures with Brightlingsea. Instead, all the fixtures between November 2018 and March 2022 were played at Colston Avenue.

Last season’s encounter at home was a Robins goal fest with Dan Bennett getting two and one each from Jordan Cheadle, Dan Hector, Jalen Jones and Danny Bassett as we ran out 6-1 winners. Valter Roche who has recently been called up for international duty with his country, São Tomé et Príncipe, grabbed a consolation goal for Brightlingsea.

Our first visit to Brightlingsea since 2018 was completely different as both sides failed to break down each other’s defences, resulting in a drab 0-0 draw.
