The UEFA Champions League Last-16 draw has been announced after an interesting group stage was concluded.
There are lots of mouth-watering fixtures with old rivalries set to be renewed and a lot of bitter-sweet reunions.
Let’s take a look at the fixtures:
- Monchengladbach vs Man City
Pep Guardiola’s side finished top of their group and as usual were expected to avoid the big teams who finished in first place.
City would be content with this draw as the English side are already considered favourites in this contest although Pep should be wary of this German side who finished second in a tight group that included Real Madrid and Inter.
- Lazio vs Bayern
Lazio would be cursing their luck as they were drawn to face current Champions Bayern Munich who have been in excellent form in the Champions League.
Lazio finished runners up to Dortmund and would now have to face their German counterparts in what is set to be an exciting encounter.
- Atletico vs Chelsea
Definitely not a new fixture to the Champions League, the two sides lock horns once again in the round of 16.
The both sides last met in the group stage of Champions League with the match ending as a draw.
Diego Costa will be set to take on his former employees in another highly anticipated fixture.
- Leipzig vs Liverpool
Another player set for a reunion with his former side is Naby Keita, who was snapped from Leipzig for a hefty sum.
Klopp will be pleased with this draw as his side managed to avoid the likes of Atletico Madrid who thwarted their hopes of a consecutive Champions League title.
- Porto vs Juventus
This fixture doesn’t look so interesting on paper, however, we have learnt to expect surprises from ‘Mr Champions League’ in what should be an easy fixture for the Serie A champions.
- Barcelona vs Paris
Perhaps, the most interesting fixture..
A repeat of the round of 16 clash in 2017 when Barcelona managed to overturn a 4-0 deficit in the first leg, going on to the win 6-1 in the second leg to stun the Parisians.
Neymar was still a Barcelona player and the ‘MSN’ trident was still in existence.
With Barca’s shaky form despite a strong start to their Champions League campaign and PSG just doing enough to qualify from their group, this encounter is wide open.
There will be a reunion for Neymar who will return to his former side where he lifted his sole Champions League and also meet up with former colleague and friend Lionel Messi.
- Sevilla vs Dortmund
A pretty open fixture although Dortmund will be considered slight favourites with the return of goal machine Haaland who missed their last two matches in the group stages with hamstring injury.
- Atalanta vs Real Madrid
Another interesting clash which has goals written all over it.
Free scoring Atalanta will face Zidane’s side who managed to finish top of the group on the final day after a 2-0 win over Monchengladbach.
A win which reduced the mounting pressure on Zidane and ensured a 29th successive round of 16 appearance for the 13-time Champions.
Though not strong favourites, Madrid are expected to scale through though Atalanta are not pushovers with Gasperini’s side known for their ruthlessness in front of goal.
