Gareth Southgate and the England back line will be breathing a sigh of relief this morning. England face Poland on Wednesday night at Wembley Stadium in a World Cup Qualifier who will be without Robert Lewandowski.
Poland will be without their main marksman and all-time top goal scorer. Lewandowski is also the captain of the Polish national side and has an incredible 66 goals in 118 games.
Lewandowski is arguably the most lethal striker in world football and is a huge loss for Poland. Lewandowksi will miss the game with a minor knee injury which he picked up in a 3-0 win over Andorra.
Huge blow for Paulo Sousa’s Poland
Poland have scored six goals in their two World Cup Qualifiers thus far. Three of those have been scored by the Bayern Munich striker. Over the last year Lewandowski has scored more than 30% of Poland’s goals in all competitions.
Lewandowski will now fly back to Germany and meet up with the Bayern Munich medical staff to undergo treatment. Bayern will be hoping the injury is not serious as they aim for another successful season under Hans-Dieter Flick.
With 42 goals in 36 games already this season it goes without saying that Robert Lewandowksi is a miss for any side. Poland currently have four points out of a possible six and could move above England in the table with a win.
England have a 100% record after previously beating San Marino and Albania. They will be hoping to carry on that record on Wednesday night against Poland without their key man.
England would have highlighted Poland as a tough games at the time of the draw and challangers for group winner. The question is now can England take advantage of a weakened Polish attack and move into poll position in group I.
