Moving on up

A first half Calvin Ekpiteta goal gave Carshalton Athletic a 1-0 win against Aveley on Monday night and a much-needed boost to their early season league points tally.

The Robins entered the game just above the relegation zone in 18th place, albeit with just seven games played. In contrast, their opponents arrived full of confidence and in third place in the league after their promotion as champions of the Isthmian League North last season. The win vaulted Carshalton up five places to 13th.

In a cagey first half, the Robins survived an early scare when Ollie Cook made a last-ditch block of Aveley’s top scorer George Sykes’ shot. And after 26 minutes they capitalised at the other end, Ekpiteta finishing from close range for his fourth goal of the season.

A more open second half saw Carshalton spurn several chances to add a second. And with five minutes remaining, Aveley almost grabbed an equalizer, but Danny Bracken made an excellent diving save from Sykes’ header to preserve the three points and a first clean sheet of the season.
