Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has claimed that Manchester United celebrated ‘like they had won the Premier league’ after their last gasp 3-2 victory over the Saints.
Southampton had taken a 2-0 lead through Jan Bednarek and James Ward-Prowse goals and were on course to continue their strong start to the premier league season.
However, an inspired half time substitution from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, bringing on summer signing Edison Cavani turned the tide for the Red Devils.
Cavani provided an assist for Bruno Fernandes before scoring a brace, including an injury time header. Thus securing United’s 10th come from behind victory over Hasenhuttl’s men in the Premier league era.
Hasenhuttl commented: “You can hear them celebrating in their dressing room.
“You know what you have done today and how tough and opponent you have been because they were celebrating like they had won the Premier league”
Hasenhuttl, who joined Southampton in December 2018 continued: “That was the thing for me because it is definitely a statement when they are celebrating like they were because it was tough.
“They had to play the best they can to win against us and we can be proud of how we played.
“We had some fantastic moments – the best I think we can against such sides. I am very happy about what we can play for today. For 2-2, that is okay for us, but then we concede a third goal. We played as good as we can today.”
United have so far struggled for consistency this season and sit eighth in the table after nine games. Whereas, Southampton have started strongly, with 17 points from 10 games – finding themselves briefly at the top of the Premier league table for the first time.
Manchester United will now travel to the London stadium to face West Ham in the league, whilst Southampton visit Brighton.
