Schalke have sacked manager Christian Gross after just two months in the job. The manager had thirty-plus years of experience in the field, but, this did nothing to stop him from becoming Schalke’s fourth managerial casualty of the season.
Number four? Are you sure?
You read that right, it is not a typo, this really is the fourth manager sacking from Schalke in just five and a half months. Firstly, David Wagner was removed from his position. Secondly, Manuel Baum and then, interim Huub Stevens would follow him. Now, just like those three Gross has been shown the door in no time at all.
Gross was given his marching orders after just one win in his eleven matches in charge. Despite securing Schalke’s only Bundesliga victory of the season, a four-nil win in his second game in charge, it was all downhill after that.
Gross was expected to be given time, however, his time already is up.
It is currently being reported, that despite losing five-one to Stuttgart this weekend, the decision was already made going into that game. Schalke had all intentions to dismiss Gross after his embarrassing four-goal derby loss to Borussia Dortmund the weekend before.
What’s Next?
Time is running out for Schalke now. This season marks their thirtieth consecutive in the Bundesliga, still, it seems unlikely they will hit thirty-one. However, the season is not beyond saving, Schalke are nine points off safety with eleven Bundesliga matches remaining.
Whilst no name has been announced yet as Gross’ successor, in the same vein as the experienced Swiss manager, the stakes will be high. Schalke will next face fellow relegation placed side FSV Mainz, as a result, a win could be the starting point of their season turnaround.
