Bishop’s Stortford v Aveley Match Report 16/9/22
Bishop’s Stortford picked up a first win in five league games, stunning league leaders Aveley on Friday Night. Frankie Merrifield netted once in each half as the Blues moved up to sixth in the Pitching in Isthmian League Premier Division, just four points off the Millers, who now have a negative goal difference despite sitting on top of the table.
Kenny Aileru had the first real chance of the match on 10 minutes after a high tempo start but with no end product, he fired through a crowd of bodies from 20 yards but it was wide of the left post. Merrifielf thought he had opened the scoring when he hit the back of the net from a tight angle, but was flagged offside from Ryan Henshaw’s header on the edge of the box in the follow-up cross from a Jonny Giles corner. Chris Harris’ low shot after a corner was saved by David Hughes, and he was on hand to palm away Merrifield’s left-footed effort from the edge of the area from Henshaw’s knocked down corner at the back post. Benas Vaivada’s low cross from the left went all the way through the six yard box, with neither ex-Blue George Sykes nor Garrett Kelly able to apply the finishing touch. On the stroke of half-time, Ryan Charles cut in off the right wing, chipped the ball over the defence to Merrifield, who stayed onside, beat Hughes to the ball and calmly slotted home into the empty net.
HT 1-0
Giles’ improvised scorpion kick first touch set the ball up perfectly to be hit on the volley, it looped over his head and his low strike from 25 yards narrowly missed the bottom corner. Ollie Peters kept the ball under control as he ran through the midfield, slid the ball through to Giles but he shot high and wide. Sykes’ turn and volley from a left wing cross went high and wide under pressure from Mark Haines, before the striker glanced a header wide of the target. Ryan Scott was caught in possession and Merrifield’s high press gave him the chance to double the lead, nicking the ball away and lofting the ball over the onrushing Hughes from 18 yards. Kelly won a header from a corner and headed narrowly over the bar, but referee Thomas Whay had blown for a foul on Jack Giddens. Donell Thomas nearly bagged his first goal for the Blues in second half injury time, but hooked over the bar from Merrifield’s head.
FT 2-0
The Blues host Bowers and Pitsea on Tuesday 20 September, before travelling to Horsham on Saturday 24 September.
