Bishop’s Stortford 0-2 St Neots Town Match Report 3/9/22

Bishop’s Stortford suffered a third defeat in four games, falling at the first hurdle in the FA Cup, with a 0-2 defeat to St Neots Town in the First Qualifying Round. Trey Charles and Mani Osei-Owusu netted either side of the break for the Step Four side, while the Blues failed to score for the first time this season.

Jonny Giles curled an effort into the grateful arms of Jamie Greygoose from the right side of the box, before the Blues No. 7 cut the ball back from the bye-line to Jack Thomas in the middle but he side-footed wide. Charles’ curling effort went through a crowd from 18 yards, and debutant Noah Phillips dived well to his right to keep the low shot out. Giles was dispossessed in the middle of the park and Charles ran through on the Blues goal and fired a rocket into the top left corner from a tight angle, with Phillips’ full length dive not able to keep the ball out this time. Ollie Peters thought he had equalised on the half hour mark, he fired home at the back post after a corner but the whistle had already gone for a foul in the build up. Giles’ first time volley from Matt Johnson’s long throw went over the crossbar, and Charles’ whipped free kick from a wide and deep position nearly found its way into the net but Phillips made a low catch. The closest chance for the Blues in the first half was Peters’ volley which rattled the crossbar after a clearing header from Giles’ corner, and on the counter attack, the visitors should have doubled their lead, as Declan Nche carried the ball from the edge of his own box, passed to Charles but he pulled the shot wide. Debutant Donell Thomas controlled the ball on the edge of the box and turned to make space for the shot, but it was deflected wide. Beadle fell in the box as he tried to side-foot home at the back post, with some behind the goal appealing for a penalty, but no foul was committed. Peters volleyed wide of the goal through a crowd with Jamie Greygoose unsighted, he could only watch and hope that it missed the target. Andre Hasanally dragged a one-on-one effort wide on the stroke of half time, after he had dispossessed the Blues in the middle of the park.

HT 0-1

Giles missed the target with a shot from Peters’ lay off, and Ryan Henshaw missed the ball when trying to clear Saleem Akanbi’s low cross, with the ball falling to Hasanally at the back post, but Tosin Olufemi blocked the shot. From the resulting corner, Giles picked out Peters, but he took the ball too close to Aaron Smith, whose perfectly timed tackle put a stop to the attack. Donell Thomas’ flicked header from Giles’ cross went straight to Greygoose, before Frankie Merrifield nodded over the bar from Archie Edwards’ left side cross. Olufemi Fired wide from Jack Thomas lay off, and Bishop’s Stortford’s push for an equaliser led to the second goal for St Neots, with Osei-Owusu picking up the ball on the edge of the Blues box, dribbling through and slotting home to seal the win.
