Bishop’s Stortford 0-0 Wingate & Finchley Match Report 1/10/22
Bishop’s Stortford were denied a fourth consecutive win by Wingate and Finchley, as the Blues were held to a goalless draw. The hosts went into the game knowing they could go top of the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division with a win, with only four matches taking place in the division on Saturday. Stortford kept a fourth consecutive clean sheet, while the visitors remain winless in nine league matches this season.
Chris Harris dispossessed the Wingate midfielder early on, and passed to Jonny Giles on the right wing, Tosin Olufemi’s cross was punched away by Ben Goode, and the follow up cross was headed over the bar by Harris. Giles’ cross caused chaos in the six yard box with Goode clearing with his feet under pressure from Frankie Merrifield. Ollie Peters’ close control led to a low cut back for Merrifield, but he side-footed wide from near the penalty spot. Charles’ cross from the right was headed to Giles on the edge of the box, his long range strike was deflected for a corner. Elliot Long fired a curling effort from 25 yards, but Jack Giddens was well behind it and made the save. Charles beat the offside trap to latch on to Harris’ back heel pass but fired wide from a tight angle, before the best chance for Wingate in the first half fell to Tyrique Clarke; breaking through on goal on the right side, he tried to chip Giddens as he came to meet him, but lofted the ball off target on the stroke of half-time.
HT 0-0
Peters’ free kick on the 18 yard line went high over the crossbar, before a counter attack by Wingate & Finchley saw Giddens save low to his left from Long’s strike. Charles cut in off the right side and shot wide aiming for the bottom left corner, before Peters’ first time strike was well wide. Harry Beadle fired wide with a volley from Merrifield’s cushioned pass, and Charles headed over the bar from Darren Foxley’s left wing cross. Charles’ run through the midfield looked promising with Merrifield waiting to receive the ball on the shoulder of the defender, the pass came but he took it too wide and couldn’t hit the target with a powerful strike. Foxley – making his 100th Blues appearance – saw his free kick glanced wide by Merrifield’s header. Long beat the returning Ryan Henshaw in a foot race to a long ball down the right wing, and his shot was well-saved at the near post by Giddens. Ritchie Danquah’s low free kick was blocked, and the follow up was off target by Alkeo Bani. Into second half injury time and the Blues were applying the pressure with long throws and set pieces, the best of which was the last action of the game, with Matt Johnson’s long throw flicked on by Henshaw’s towards the top corner but it was blocked on the line.
