Carshalton Athletic fell to a 1-0 defeat against Hastings United on Saturday after being reduced to 10 men early in the second half.
After a tight first half of hardly any chances at either end, the game’s scales tipped in favour of the hosts in the space of a few second half minutes.
Walter Figueira had just seen his goalbound effort turned on to the bar by home goalkeeper Louis Rogers when Robins skipper Tom Beere received a second yellow card for what the referee deemed deliberate handball with eight minutes played of the second half.
With a crowd of 1,012 roaring them on, Hastings found renewed energy from the dismissal and Ben Pope should have scored rather than hitting the bar and then heading the rebound into Danny Bracken’s hands. Despite being pinned back for long periods, however, Carshalton’s 10 men continued to fashion chances and Figueira and Gus Sow should perhaps have done more to trouble Rogers with opportunities that came their way.
Carshalton will also be kicking themselves about Hastings’ winner. First, they conceded a cheap free kick 30 yards out and when Sam Hasler struck his low shot, it looked to be heading straight into the Robins’ three-man wall. Somehow though, it found a gap and nestled in the bottom corner out of the reach of Bracken’s left hand.
The defeat, Carshalton’s fourth in seven league games, leaves them in 17th place ahead of next week’s FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round tie against high flying National League South side, Havant and Waterlooville.
