The Northwood Debrief – Basingstoke Town Football Club

We caught up with Dan Brownlie following today’s narrow loss to league leaders Northwood…

“It’s was a tough game today against a very well organised side. You can see why they’ve won so many games, especially with their size in set piece moments. A solitary moment was the difference between the teams. We had chances of our own to level the score and more with Ezio’s couple of opportunities amongst others but it wasn’t to be our day today.”

“Sadly you’d have spotted that we were without Michael Atkinson this afternoon. He contacted me yesterday as he’s been hit with a heavy illness that carried on into today. It takes a lot for him to miss any form of football. Obviously with Dunny, Dre and Luis all out with injuries and Anton only having one session under his belt since Chertsey, we didn’t have any ‘specialist’ midfielders available.”

“Stefan did me a job today in a semi-alien position at short notice. Whilst Ashleigh Artwell is slightly more accustomed to that role and Jimmy [James Clark] has been performing really well in that deeper position – we have been missing those natural midfield options for a few games now. Whilst I thought we competed well in there throughout, especially in the first half – it’s a tough role to play. It’s one of those positions that doesn’t have a huge amount of transferable skills from other positions. Hopefully we can start getting bodies back and hit a bit of luck with on the injury front.”

“We just needed a bit more quality and discipline in the closing moments to truly test their back line – I was a bit disappointed in that sense. Our final ball, that has been really reliable in recent weeks, just wasn’t quite there today – partly by their good defensive line, but also our lack of quality in moments that could have been the difference. Looking at the game in its entirety – we defended well again and created a few good chances at the other end. I still can’t work out how Ezio’s left footed strike that hit the post hasn’t ended up in the back of the net, but they’re the margins.”

“Marcio and Dre both did a bit before the game with the ball for the first time today. Dunny isn’t a million miles off being back after making a lot of progress this week. Michael will be back for next week. Argent and Luis are probably a few weeks away. We’re getting there bit by bit!”
