Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020 has just been announced in full. Southgate had the unenviable task of cutting his squad down from the 33 named in his provisional squad to the 26 he will take to the tournament. You can see the full team below.
The appearance of four right-backs in the England squad in somewhat of a surprise. However, the potential versatility from the four is vital with Walker and Trippier both excellent in more than one position across the backline.
Both Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson have survived injury scares to take their places in the final squad. This could prove to be vital with them both being club captains, alongside fellow selections Coady, Grealish, Rice (vice-captain), Harry Kane and Mings (vice-captain).
This plethora of captains has allowed Southgate to have the perfect mix of youth and leaders in his England squad.
Who Was Left Out?
In total the seven names left out were:
- Aaron Ramsdale
- Ben Godfrey
- Ben White
- James Ward-Prowse
- Jesse Lingard
- Ollie Watkins
- Mason Greenwood
Ramsdale was fully expected to be the keeper left out so this came as little surprise. The same was the case with both Ben White and Ben Godfrey. Whilst the latter two have had excellent seasons and may feel a little unfortunate to miss out, none of the trio had made their debuts and so the pressure could have been huge.
The writing was largely on the wall for Ward-Prowse, especially once Trent Alexander-Arnold had been taken, nullifying the need for JWP’s set-piece proficiency. Whereas in the case of Lingard, an excellent second-half to the season was not enough to secure his place.
Finally, Watkins and Greenwood also missed out. In the case of Watkins, there being better options with Kane/Calvert-Lewin seemed to cost him. Greenwood, on the other hand, announced his withdrawal from the squad due to injury earlier in the day.
